AN AMERICAN SILVER AND SILVER GILT HOT WATER URN
Gorham Manufacturing Co., Providence, Rhode Island, 1876 Marks: (lion-anchor-G), STERLING, 1220, 15 1/2 PINTS, I 19 x 9 x 8-5/8 inches (48.3 x 22.9 x 21.9 cm) 97.7 troy ounces The silver and silver gilt two handled covered hot water urn with spigot of classical form on removable raised base with classical frieze in low relief, chased repoussé design to front of flaming pot on stand and to reverse a robed female figure, cast handles from palmette mount, domed lid topped by finial of leaves and pineapple. The design of the urn is attributed to Thomas Pairpoint (American 1838-1902) who began working at Gorham in the 1870s. The date letter and design motifs relate the urn closely to the Furber Silver Service designed by Pairpoint for Colonel Henry Jewett Furber (1840-1916) of Chicago which was displayed at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. Provenance: The Jean and Graham Devoe Williford Charitable Trust Slight dent above raised arm of female figure. Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information) Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 100-110 lots per hour. On some occasions the Live Auctioneer bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now AS insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject a Live Auctioneer Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the Live Auctioneers live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you AS the winning bidder. By bidding via Live Auctioneers, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since Live Auctioneer bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. IN most cases the floor responds before the Live Auctioneer bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie Live Auctioneer bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through Live Auctioneers carry a 19.50% Buyer's Premium with a $9 minimum Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned IN conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Auctions. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Auctions, and all other information should be considered preliminary. Lot: 71339 Winning Notification and Billing: After the FINAL session IN this auction is complete, Heritage will send e-mail and snail mail invoices. This process normally takes several days. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Auctions, and all other information should be considered preliminary.
