Description
"STERLING FOUNDERS' WEEK CUP, ""THE QUAKER CITY MOTOR CLUB, 1908"", H 36"", BY BAILEY, BANKS & BIDDLE:The urn-form sterling silver trophy engraved ""The Quaker City Motor Club, Founders Week Cup, 1908"", overall H.36"", W.20"", and marked at the underside ""Bailey, Banks & Biddle, Sterling, S 6782"" (see photo); the cover centered by a figural finial of William Penn, no apparent marks. The base alone weighs approximately 25 lbs., the unmarked cover weighs approximately 6 lbs. Together with the original turned wood pedestal base measuring H.7"", Dia.18 1/2"". The trophy was awarded to Irving J. Morse, owner of the first-place Locomobile driven by George Robertson, and is featured on the back cover of the book ""The Fairmount Park Motor Races, 1908-1911"" written by Michael J. Seneca. Condition
"Overall, a beautifully crafted sterling silver trophy in good condition. The following was observed as it is displayed in the showcase: at the back side of the base of the trophy there are three nubs (where an adornment may have been?, see photo 7.03); the laurel band below the figure of William Penn extends downward slightly (as evident in photos 7.13 and 7.14); and the interior rim of the cover is dented in several areas, visible only when the cover is removed (see photos 7.14 and 7.17); the original turned wood pedestal base shows wear.
