Description de l'身ypte, 2nd edition, 187 livraisons only, of 206, in 70 original parts, comprising 50 plates and tables for the Atlas, 370 plates for the AntiquitT, 151 plates for the 腎at Moderne, and 237 plates for the Histoire Naturelle, lacking 2 plates, only, from the parts supplied, 808 engraved plates, most single, some double or folding, variable spotting scattered throughout, occasional browning and dampstaining, sheet edges generally frayed and creased, but almost all well outside the plates, a very few tears just into the plate, with tissue guards, the 70 parts all in original printed wrappers with blue contents labels pasted on, occasional additional labels, some splitting on fold, some tears and creases at edges, one or two more extensively, large folio, Paris, C.L.F. Pancoucke, 1821-30.***A huge collaborative effort by the French scholarly and scientific community, brought together in the Institut d'身ypte, founded on the outskirts of Cairo on the orders of Napoleon himself. The purpose was to assimilate Egypt into the French Empire, by the means of this most comprehensive survey of every aspect of the country's cultural and natural history. This consolidated title stemmed from published output of the Institut going back to 1798, the first 10 volumes finally being presented to Napoleon in 1808. Such was the demand that the present, 2nd, edition was commenced even before the 1st had technically been completed. But its overwhelming significance put it beyond the realms of power politics, ensuring its continued support under emperor, king and state, throughout its protracted publication over two decades..
