Description
6 ¾”h., Brilliant blue, lead glass, wide “u” shaped bowl pattern molded with 11 large diamonds, sheared rim, applied circular tapered foot, pontil scar; matching 11 diamond lid referred to by collectors as “The Dahlia Lid” with pattern molded “spire” finial, pontil scar; America or England, c. 1765-1774, sparkling mint condition ;one of the finer specimens we have seen, a thing of beauty and excellence . In regard to the historical record, Henry Stiegel tried to corner the American glass market between 1763-1774. The plan was to copy the English and Continental glass that was being sold to Americans through British agents. Stiegel took full advantage and action when a non-importation agreement with England was enacted by Congress. He waisted no time in going to Great Britain to find and bring back English glass blowers to Lancaster County, where they would make the identical products that they made in Britain. So successful did Stiegel imitate the contemporaneous glass of the English and Continental glass houses, with which he competed for the American market, that today in most cases, it is impossible to distinguish one from the other; thus the name Stiegel- type was born. An important client of Stiegel, a buyer of English glass, wrote a letter to Stiegel thus informing him that he would no longer be buying his glass from England but instead purchase all his glassware from Mr. Stiegel; this fine period sugar bowl has been considered over the years to be one of the most beautiful pattern molded sugar bowls ever made! Of all the known so called Stiegel- type sugar bowls, the “Dahlia” lid examples are the most sought after by collectors, a classic!
