"A. Coates Pat - Mar.20th '88 - Watertown, NY" Coates Marked Two Speed Trout Reel. Abraham Coates was granted patent number 379,683 for his two speed reel that allowed a switch from a 1:1 ratio to a 1:1.5 retrieve ratio by means of an alternate handle location. The post unoccupied by the screw off handle was capped off by a knurled screw (this example has a replacement screw). A twist click is located on the underside of the reel and performs perfectly. With a little apple shaped grasp on the counter balanced "S" shaped handle, this example is in very good condition with almost completely intact nickel plating.
