Billinghurst Patent Side-Mounted Trout Reel. Sporting both the initial Aug. 9, 1859 and 1873 renewal patent markings, this circa 1873 reel has a full size foot, and a fixed handle, the result of an old repair to the original folding handle. With some ring repairs on the spool, a nice example in good minus condition with some brassing. Billinghurst, perhaps the country's premier gunsmith of the 19th century, hailed from Rochester, NY, and is credited for the first fly reel patent in the United States.
