Malloch Carved Salmon Plaque

Sign In to see what this sold for

Malloch Carved Salmon Plaque. An exquisite example from the Perth, Scotland tackle firm P.D. Malloch. Gilt lettering describes the fish as being "caught on the River Boyne at Dunmoe Lodge Co Meath, 12 March 1933, Length 3FT 10 Ins, Girth 2Ft 1 Inch, Weight 40 1/2 lbs". The southern Ireland "River Record" model stands in relief of the plaque by 4 3/4" and is true to its 46" length. Elegantly portrayed, the carver captured the beauty of the fish with a graceful rounded body and sweeping gills. Mounted on a three piece backboard which was then attached via brass plate hardware to a period frame measuring 54 1/2" x 20 3/4". Featured in Ronald Swanson's book Fish Models, Plaques and Effigies (page 154), the piece had resided in the home of Mr. T.V. Murphy, who landed the fish in 1933, until it was discovered in 1990. Model includes a photocopy of the record from the Irish Department of Agriculture documenting the catch. Impressive in size, form and quality, and in excellent overall condition. Certainly one of the finest plaques to come to market in quite some time.
