Rare Early English Creel

Sign In to see what this sold for

Rare Early English Creel. Exceptional late Georgian full pot bellied leather creel, measuring 10 1/2" in length, 4 1/4" deep and 6" high. Hailing from the English Yorkshire Dales, the lid bears a Wensleydale full sunburst pattern as well as a fine cross hatch pattern to the belt or strap receiver. The simplistic brass hasp and latch is typical of a creel from this very early period (versus the heavy embellishment of a later Victorian counterpart). Interior is finished in an original cream paint, also fitted with additional utilitarian brass hinges. The piece is complete with a slightly later strap. While there is some expected wear and crackling to the surface from age and use, it is in excellent condition. A rare opportunity to acquire an important 1790-1830 creel, with a tremendous amount of eye appeal, perfect for the advanced collector of historic tackle. The earliest creel to have ever been offered for sale at Lang's.
