Phair, Charles - Atlantic Salmon Fishing - 1937, Eugene Connett, Derrydale Press, New York. Deluxe edition limited to 40 two-volume sets, of which this is number 29, signed by the author. Volume one contains 193 pages, handsomely bound in 3/4 green leather with gilt titling and decorations on a five raised band spine. In addition to color and black & white illustrations by Ogden Pleissner and Robert Nisbet, the volume contains a number of photographic visuals. All vibrant color plates taken after original works are protected via crisp tissue guards. Volume two is bound in the same manner as the first, constructed of a clam shell box housing fourteen mounted plates. Twelve of the plates have a completed fly of the following patterns; Canadian Black Dose, Jock Scott, Monell/Bonbright, Nipisiguit Grey, Night Hawk, Silver Blue/Blue Charm, Mitchell, Silver Grey, Thunder and Lightning, Dusty Miller, and Blue Charm/Brown Fairy. According to Henry Siegel's book The Derrydale Press, a Bibliography said flies were commissioned to be tied by the noted firm of C. Farlow, London. Additionally volume two contains sample boards for both "Salmon Gut" and "Salmon Fly Hooks". Both volumes are housed in the original cloth covered slipcase. Condition on the set is overall near fine. Volume one has a very sml water stain on reverse of frontispiece (does not affect illustration). Illustration opposite page seven "looking up the river on the Restigouche" has creasing on lower left corner. Volume two has a crack to the leather running the hinge of the clamshell box (a cloth under support still secures the binding). Inside of the box has the slightest evidence of adhesion (likely were a book plate was affixed). "Jock Scott" patterned fly has some loosening, otherwise all examples are in clean presentation. Slip case has ex-libris plate of James E. Jones, some general shelving wear. Both spines have some degree of fading, collector Don Frazier commented of the edition "the spines of every copy I've seen has the face of the spine faded off to tan". Atlantic Salmon Fishing is commonly regarded as the crowning achievement of Mr. Connett's productions, an edition that propels this publication to a true visual art form. A rare opportunity to acquire one of the 20th century's most coveted titles, certain to be the pinnacle of any sporting book collection.
