American RevolutionRevolutionary War-Era French Saber with Original Scabbard
c. 1780, French Saber with Inscribed Crown and Initialed Blade Markings, and Leather Scabbard, Choice Very Fine.
Likely French grenadier or cavalryman saber, adopted for use in the American colonies before and during the American Revolution. Attractive saber with 23.5” long curved sword with grooved fuller, and markings on both sides: A crown above large initials, “MJ.” Original gray and black patina, minor wear. Brass quillon, backstrap, pommel, and D-guard knucklebow are in great condition. 4.5”-long leather covered grip, exposed wood near ricasso, also with minor wear. Black leather scabbard is worn and cracked in half, hole in tip, and a few other holes. Still an intriguing set, with detailed blade markings! (2 items)
