Item Details
Description
This Steinway model B grand piano (serial no. 414018), in ebony finish, was manufactured in Steinway’s New York factory on December 15, 1969, and sold to Claude P. Street Piano Co. in Nashville, TN. Soon after, the piano was sold to Woodland Sound Studios and used in Studio A, where it was played by some of the most famous piano players in the world including Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and two of Elvis Presley’s pianists, Floyd Cramer and David Briggs. The piano was used on the biggest-selling records of the day including albums by Roy Orbison and The Oak Ridge Boys (including the hit song “Elvira”) and appeared in one of the opening scenes of the Robert Altman film “ Nashville ”. It becomes central to the scene as Henry Gibson’s character berates “Frog” for playing the piano “like a frog”. Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis both used this piano to record albums. A recording engineer on a particularly raucous Jerry Lee Lewis session remembers wiping The Killer’s blood off the keys after he had finished playing. Woodland Sound Studios was known as the place to record in Nashville during the 1970’s and early 80’s, but in addition to contributing to the albums of country music royalty, this piano has the distinction of having contributed to recordings by most of the fathers of rock n’ roll: Little Richard and Roy Orbison, as previously stated, as well as Carl Perkins, Bill Haley & His Comets, and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. In addition to its appearances on country albums by the Oak Ridge Boys, the piano was used to record a Lionel train commercial featuring Johnny Cash and songs by artists including Charlie Daniels, Ronnie Milsap, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Conway Twitty, Barbara Mandrell, Kenny Rogers, Brenda Lee, Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, Slim Whitman, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Tex Ritter, Lee Greenwood, Jerry Reed, J.J. Cale, Chet Atkins, Floyd Cramer, Lynn Anderson, Tommy Overstreet, Gail Davies, Billy “Crash” Craddock, Del Shannon, Mickey Gilley, Shirley Caesar, Jimmy Swaggart, Dick Curless, and blues legend Bobby “Blue” Bland. The piano was played by virtually all of Nashville ’s “A-team” studio piano players who helped define “The Nashville Sound” in the 1970’s. The above information is supported by a thoroughly researched and documented provenance that includes five signed statements of authenticity. The piano was purchased in c. 1984 from Woodland Sound Studios by its current owner and her then-husband who was a recording engineer who often worked at the studio. It is still in working condition and is currently being used for custom recording projects, played most recently by ragtime legend Johnny Maddox for a current album project.
