A fine 19th C. Swiss carriage clock

A fine, high quality porcelain paneled gold gilt late 19th century carriage clock made for "Samuel Chew" of "Cliveden" (Philadelphia). This clock by the Droucourt Co. dates to the late 1800s and is equipped with s hour strike and repeat mechanism. Although a British sympathizer, Benjamin Chew (1722-1810), who built the "Cliveden" mansion in Germantown, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Samuel Chew, Sr was Benjamin's lineal descendant whose nephew, Sam Chew, Jr became an actor who appeared on television and in movies, with, among other things, regular appearances in the series "Bionic Woman "(1976-1978).
