His wife was Elizabeth Eberstadt and during their early years of marriage entertained many of the major artists of their time including Burne-Jones, Whistler, Henry James, Oscar Wilde, J.M.Barrie to name but a few. The Lewises were particularly close friends with Burne-Jones, and during 1882 Wilde corresponded with Mrs Lewis while he toured America showing regard and gratitude in his letters..
