Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723 - 1792). Portrait of Admiral Viscount Keppel in uniform. Oil on canvas. 30 x 25 inches (76 x 63.5 cm). Provenance: Sotheby's New York, 16 June 1977, lot 224; Sold on behalf of Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc., New York. An important portrait of Admiral Augustus Keppel Viscount Keppel (1725-1780). Keppel began his career with Lord Anson's Voyage around the world in 1740. He was one of the leading naval commanders of his day, and a prominent figure in the administration of the Navy. Reynolds was a close friend and painted his portrait several times. This portrait appears to be a closer version of the three-quarter length portrait in the National Portrait Gallery, London (NPG 179).Condition reportFurther research suggests that this portrait is one of five portraits (including the full length portrait in the NPG). The four smaller versions were painted by Reynolds and given by Keppel to the members of his legal council after his acquittal in late 1779.
