[AUSTEN, Jane (1775-1817)] Sense and Sensibility: A Novel. London: Printed for the Author by C. Roworth, published by T. Egerton, 1811. 3 volumes, 12mo (172 x 105 mm). Half-titles. Contemporary tan half calf over marbled boards, spines ruled and titled in gilt in six panels with arabesque gilt device in first, third and sixth panels. Condition: some intermittent light spotting, two leaves of vol. III with loss to fore-edge not affecting text; joints on two lightly rubbed, upper joint on volume III just starting, some light shelfwear, corners rubbed or exposing. Provenance: Major David Gordon (sale, Christie's, 12 February 1963, lot 6, £300, Pickering & Chatto), (note on flyleaf); from Seven Gables Bookshop. first edition. The rarest of her six major works. According to Keynes Sense and Sensibility was published in an edition of no more than 1,000 or possibly even as few as 750.
