Description
65. COLONIAL NEWSPAPER Complete edition of The Boston Chronicle, 8pp, 8¼"x10½", Jun 20, 1768. Vol. 1. No. 27. Printed by Mein and Fleeming. Excellent content. Containing a four-page essay entitled "Sermons To Asses" attributed "it is said to be written by B. Franklin," though most probably authored by James Murray in London. "Sermon I." begins with a quote from Genesis 49:14 regarding the Hebrew tribe of Issachar. The reader is exhorted to take offense "whenever men are required to believe any thing upon human authority in matters of religion, or to worship God in any other manner than they are plainly required in scripture, it is a burden of religious slavery, and not the yoke of Christ..." In an open letter to the British governor of Massachusetts-Bay, a petition is made regarding British law and the rights of British citizens: "...in open violation of these fundamental rights of Britons, laws and taxes are imposed on us, to which we not only have not given our consent..." Several of the founding fathers are mentioned throughout, the repeal of the hated Stamp Act, news of Major Robert Rogers' supposed treasonous villainy [for which he was later vindicated], and much more. Light general toning; occasional foxing; small paper loss at top border edge; else in excellent condition. Est: $150-300
