FIRST EDITION FIRST PRINTING573. MARGARET MITCHELL (1900-1949). American author of Gone With The Wind, one of the most popular novels of all time, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1937 and released as a motion picture in 1939 to much acclaim. It took Mitchell ten years to complete the book. Her celebrated novel Gone With The Wind, 1037pp, 6"x8¾", The MacMillan Company, New York, 1936. First Edition. First Printing, May 1936. Inscribed and signed on first free endpaper: "For William T. Hyde Margaret Mitchell" in dark ink. Light toning of signature page and on opposite pastedown (lighter) from old newspaper clipping insert; minor corner bumps; minor top spine wear; else in better than very good condition with bright gray cloth covered boards and blue lettering with decorative scroll design on cover and spine. Original dust jacket with $3.00 price imprint present in poor condition with significant tears at extremities with some paper loss; spine separated with top and bottom repaired with old clear tape; separated torn spine mid-section present; flaps torn from main section of jacket with little paper loss; edge nicks and tears, especially at top and bottom spine where most of paper loss is evident; old tape stains on back cover along spine edge and across top margin. William Hyde was director of Methodist Publishing House divisions of New York, Cincinnati and Chicago during the first half of the twentieth century.
