ORIGINAL SCREEN-WORN BATMAN STUNT SUIT675. [STUNT BATMAN SUIT] Original screen-worn stunt costume used in Batman Returns, the critically acclaimed 1992 film directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton, the third highest grossing film in America that year. Complete with original cowl and Bat emblem, full length vinyl cape, and body suit, it lacks only boots, gloves and belt. According to director Burton, Keaton performed even more of his own stunts during this sequel to the 1989 film, injuring his leg during the filming of a rooftop scene. Therefore it is quite possible Keaton wore this costume in these scenes. Provenance is from Jay Ohrberg, noted creator and collector of cars for the film industry who built the Batmobile and other vehicles used in this and other Batman films, and the original owner of this costume. The Bat emblem, though more crudely constructed and/or possibly damaged on set, is present on the cowl. This lighter costume was worn most likely during rooftop scenes, such as Batman's battle with Catwoman (played by Michelle Pfeiffer) and in other arduous stunts and scenes throughout the film when the much heavier "hero" version was not practical. It was not meant for detailed closeups. This costume was updated for this film with thinner, more flexible foam rubber and a zipper. This costume, like the few other surviving Batman costumes, was originally sprayed with silicone for shine onscreen, which exacerbated the normal deterioration in 17-year old rubber exposed to the production hazards of filming. There are some wrinkles on the cowl. In fair to overall good condition for a stunt suit, needing some minor restoration, this is one of the few costumes still in existence, as most were considered disposable after production during this era.
