Autographs
1825 Arkansas Land Grant Signed by President John Quincy Adams and Two Early Documents Relating to Early Settlements of Arkansas Territory

JOHN QUINCY ADAMS.
This set of documents concerns Arkansas land transactions--one is signed by President John Quincy Adams!
1. October 10, 1825, Autograph Document Signed, "J.Q. Adams", in dark ink on vellum, being a confirmation of a landgrant, with a paper and wax seal at the bottom, minor edge erosion and toning, not affecting the signature in the slightest. Fine.
2. A February 1803 Manuscript Document, being a Request for a Grant of Land in the name of Catherine Pertuis, and signed by Francisco Luengo, commandant of the Arkansas post--written in Spanish and French on fine-laid paper 12.5" x 8.5", one page, Very Fine.
3. A March 26, 1818 Deed, a Manuscript Document Signed by Elizabeth Pertius ("her mark"), selling the same Arkansas land to a William Russell, on fine-laid, watermarked paper, 12.5" x 8.5", three-page integral document with docket page, Very Fine. Russell was an early settler and attorney in St. Louis, Territory of Louisiana. He was mostly involved in land speculation and is given credit for much of the development of Missouri and Arkansas Territories. He also extended into the Illinois and Iowa Territories, and was the founder of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Alton, Illinois. Although he was involved in politics, he never held any major positions, and after the purchases of the Louisiana Territory, many of his Spanish and French landgrants were disallowed because it was thought they were fraudulent. In his 1857 will he left over $500,000 in lands and money to his heirs. Excellent content and historical value! (3 items)
