Signature of Senator John Calhoun JOHN C. CALHOUN. April 1, 1836, Autograph Letter Signed, "John Calhoun", as Senator, Washington, D.C., to Hon. Lewis Cass, Secretary of War, one page measuring 9.75" x 7.5", Very Fine. The letter is also signed by John Reynolds, then a Congressman from Illinois, formerly the state's Governor. The letter reads, in full: "Sir, Lieutenant Alexander of the U.S. Army who is stationed at Jefferson Barracks, is desirous of being ordered to this city with a view to settle his accounts with the government. If it is consistent with the rules of the department, we would beg leave most respectfully to solicit a favorable consideration of his request. We have the honor to be very respectfully your Obt. Servts. John Calhoun, John Reynolds." Lightly aged paper with normal folds and a small stain in the body of the letter, but nothing affecting Calhoun's 2.5" long signature.
