Superb Anti-Slavery Political Letter by Salmon P. Chase

SALMON P. CHASE.
June 12, 1851, Writes to a Massachusetts Newspaper, Cincinnati, OH, Choice Extremely Fine. Autograph Letter Signed, "S.P. Chase", 10" x 8", 2 pages, an excellent letter by Salmon P. Chase to the editor of a Massachusetts newspaper detailing party intrigues in wake of the Compromise of 1850 and the election of 1852, vividly illustrating the effects of the slavery question on party politics. He writes in part:
"...I notice particularly all you say in relation to the state of parties in Massachusetts. It is my opinion that it will be found impossible to rally earnest anti-slavery Whigs in support of Scott or time-healed Jeffersonian Democrats in support of any candidates which likely to receive the nomination of a National Convention. It will be easier to do the former than the later, or the Whigs, if they nominate Scott will be likely to nominate him upon the Philadelphia Platform, composed of one plank & than a motion to adjourn; while a so called Democratic National Convention will be apt to swallow the Compromise [of 1850] whole, the fugitive slave law epically. they will take the Ground of the Belfast Journal, and the Radical Democracy might as well undertake this at once. Nothing but extreme terror will prevent them from doing it. I am glad to see your paper keeps up its courage and tone. I hope it prospers as it deserves.... I plan which I mentioned to you sometime since as being in favor for the establishment of a paper like the Standard in this City, has not yet been carried into effect. It is not unlikely however that it will be before long. It will be a democratic paper and advocate free principles, and organization only as a mans of carrying principles into application. Our Columbus project will not be pressed at present. If we succeed in getting a good paper here we shall probably move in the Columbus matter next fall. The Toledo Republican, a paper where present Editor Mr. Miller, will probably take charge of the establishment here, will, I think,, need an Editor... Should you entertain though of quitting the Standard and Massachusetts it might be worth while to turn your attention in that direction... I see that Judge Sprague is inclined to pack juries on question so flaw in criminal cases. Juries being judges of law & fact, I cannot see the propriety of interrogating judges as to their opinion whether they sit in the jury box or on the bench..."
