George Clarke Signed 1739 NY Military Commission GEORGE CLARKE, Colonial Governor and Lieutenant Governor of New York. January 11, 1739, Partially-Printed Document Signed, "Geo. Clarke," 1 page, 8.25" x 12.75," Very Rare, Choice Fine. This document, dated at Ft. George, N.Y. is a military commission appointing Johannos Dockor an ensign in the company of militia foot for Minisinck in the County of Orange under Captain Hendrick Johnson Kartrito. Signed by George Clarke as His Majesty's Lieutenant Governor & Commander in Chief of the Province of New York. The official embossed seal appears in the upper left corner, and Clarke's signature in the lower right completes this document. Overall this document is in nice condition with some minor chipping at the bottom and a few pin holes along the folds. The printing and writing is strong and clear. A second unidentified signature appears in the lower left. Interestingly, near the bottom the printed words "England, Scotland," have been crossed out and replaced with a handwritten "Great Britain." A great document with a very rare signature of George Clarke as Acting Colonial Governor of New York. George Clarke (1676-1763) was acting colonial Governor of New York from 1736, following William Cosby's death, to 1743 when George Clinton arrived to replace Cosby. Clarke then had the post of Lieutenant Governor until 1747. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
