Outstanding High Quality Authentic "USA" Bar Copper

Undated (ca. 1785) Bar Copper. Breen-1145. Very Choice About Uncirculated.

84.1 grns. This is an important and very historic, major Colonial type coin which is struck after the "USA" Bar Buttons that were worn on the American Revolutionary War Continental Army soldiers uniforms. This coin is quite beautiful and sharp in appearance with the diagnostic leg of the "A" sharp and clear, passing over the middle of the "S". Also, the burr on the far right edge of the second bar on the reverse is extremely well defined, sharp and clear to the naked eye. The even, light to medium brown surfaces feature a definite choice glossy eye appeal. The surfaces are mostly free of marks, a tiny trivial natural inclusion in left obverse field is as made at the mint. There is a very minor rim tick at 9:00 seen only on the reverse and an ancient scratch is nearly invisible between the eighth and ninth bars, counting from the top. The "A" over "S" diagnostic is perfectly clear on the obverse, as are the requisite cracks and burrs from the bars on the reverse, which all attest to this Bar copper's absolutely genuine status.
The Bar Copper has found a welcome and most important place in Colonial American numismatics, with just a few trading hands at auction each year. This current example being every bit as sharp and fine in its detail and appearance as is the current Guide Book plate specimen, found on page 70, for this type and is the finest quality example we have offered.

Important Comparison. *** Please note three additional images that we have located on similar PCGS and NGC Certified Bar Cents, having been recently offered at auction. You will clearly see that two of these coins, from different sales and in different grading service holders are indeed the same, identical coin. Both images show the major patch of surface roughness and corrosion on the upper obverse. The A over S leg is worn and less sharply defined, as are the reverse bars, than on our present specimen. Now please carefully compare either the NGC or PCGS graded coins to our current offering. This cataloger finds our current lot to be far sharper, cleaner, more pleasing and natural, having vastly better eye appeal. If the NGC coin is now graded MS-61, how would you grade our example? Perhaps our grade and estimate range is far too conservative!
