DESCRIPTION: A collection of Civil War letters written from Alfred Wanamaker to his wife Melissa in Bucks County, Pennsylvania between October 3,1861 and September 19, 1862. Seven letters plus one fragment with forwarding address information plus four envelopes. Written from various locations starting with Philadelphia and moving to Arlington, Virginia and finally in the last to Hagerstown, Maryland. The majority of the earlier letters discuss the sites around him and acquaintences he has seen. He also notes he wishes his wife Melissa could visit and that she would write him. Early on he notes that his company won't be in any danger though he notes in his September 19, 1862 letter that he can hear the battle about five to six miles away (possibly referring to followup skirmishes after the Battle of Antietam). Other items of note include a brief description of a torchlight procession and fireworks display for the arrival of the Union Fleet in South Carolina in the November 13, 1861 letter (written on full color "For the Union New York" stationary) and the capture of 100 secessionist cavalry in the November 27 letter.
