Arkadi Alexandrovich RYLOFF (1870-1939) Landscape. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right and on verso, dated 1919. 17 1/4 x 25 in, frame 25 1/2 X 35 1/2 in. Representative of Russian modernist style and symbolism. Studied at Central College of Technical Drawing founded by Baron A.L Shtiglits (1888-1891) under K.Y. Kryzhitsky and in Academy of Arts (1894-1897) under A.I. Kuindzhi. Participated in such exhibitions, as "World of Art", "The Union of Russian Artists", AHRR, was a foundation member of the Society named after A.I. Kuindzhi. (in the period of 1925-1930 was its president). Worked as an illustrator (for "Chizh" magazine, 1936, made illustrations to V.V. Bianki's book "Teremok", 1936, and Trapper's Tales", 1937). Wrote a book of essays, describing nature, and decorating it by water-colour illustrations made by himself ("When It Happens", 1936). Since 1902 he worked much as a teacher in Painting School at the Society of Encouragement of the Arts, in Academy of Arts. The artist's "Recollections" were published posthumously (1960). His works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum and many other regional museums. (http://www.sovkom.ru/)
