decorated manuscript on vellum. (212 x 148 mm). 258 ff., mostly in gatherings of 8, contemporary foliation in upper right corner, ii-ccxlvii only, stitched in are 2 vellum leaves with docketed notes pasted down, at the end are 7 leaves from a different ms. of music written in brown ink on red staves and 2 1/4 leaves heavily annotated in a 17th-century hand, (+ 2 vellum flyleaves). 32 lines written in black ink in a small gothic bookhand in two columns between four verticals and 33 horizontal lines ruled in point, justification: 134 x 104 mm, rubrics in red, numerous two-line calligraphic initials of alternately blue and red, the infills with scrolling patterns of the opposite color, many initials with flourishing extending into margins text capitals touched red or blue. 27 five-, seven- and nine-line 'puzzle' initials of red and blue with elaborate scrolling of the opposite color on the infill forming geometric patterns. A passage of music incorporating a series of four-line red staves and black square-shaped neumes of musical notation heading the text to over 200 leaves. Early 19th-century blind-stamped calf over bevelled wooden boards in trellis panel enclosing a fleur-de-lys motif within a roll-tooled frame and tooled turn-ins, spine lettered in gilt in second and fifth compartments, seven raised bands. Condition: lacking some leaves to calendar and text, few docketed noted pasted down to margins, later inscriptions heavy to front flyleaf and last leaves, very slight cropping affecting some initial flourishes or ink annotations, slight worming mainly to first and last few leaves, some areas of the fore-edge and upper right corners affected by dampstaining and small tears, vellum browned in some areas, minor smudges, occasional slight cockling; joints slightly cracked, lightly rubbed, covers bowed. Developed in the latter half of the 12th century, the distinctive 'puzzle' initial became the standard form of decoration in well-finished books.
