VORAGINE, Jacobus de (c.1230-c.1298). Legenda aurea. Lyons: Jacob Huguetan, 1507. 4to, in 8s (245 x 166 mm). 383ff., foliated in roman numerals. A large woodcut initial 'L' with face and a monkey to title, printed in red and black, woodcut printer's device, over 180 in-text historiated woodcut initials including a few figures of the saints and their martyrdoms and scenes from the life of Christ. Bound in are four leaves of ms. notations at the front, and one leaf between y10 and A5 in the same hand. Full 19th-century calf, spine tooled in gilt, all edges stained red, marbled papers used as pastedowns. Condition: mildly stained minimally affecting text, slightly thumbsoiled; small gouges to covers, joints slightly cracked, head and tail chipped with some loss, corners bumped. Provenance: ink inscription to title wrongly dates work to 1509; Canon Carter (bookplate). Third Huguetan edition of 'The Golden Legend.' [With:] THOMAS A KEMPIS, Saint (1379 - 1471). (of 112). 30 lines, Gothic type. Two illuminated initials at opening leaf, capitals in red and blue with guide letters. Modern green morocco by Chas. W. Prufer, spine lettered in gilt.
