CAVICEO, Jacopo (1443-1511). Il Peregrino. Venice: Pietro Nicolini da Sabbio, 1547. 8vo (152 x 102 mm). 271 foliated leaves, original final blank. Three in-text woodcut vignettes, title-page with printed frame, second title with full-page woodcut depicting a scene of centaurs playing music, a man tied to a tree and a cupid with a banderol reading across "Ancoraspero Solverme" the word Amor under the man's feet, a pilgrim's hat and staff rest at the very bottom of the scene. Later half vellum over marbled paper boards, gilt title to morrocco lettering label. Condition: ink inscriptions to pastedowns, some light dampstaining and browning; extremities rubbed. The 1547 reprinting of Il Peregino, a story recounting the love between Peregrino and Ginerva and the journeys and mishaps of the protagonist. The work is frequently compared to Dante's Divine Comedy for its imaginative and allegorical visions and underlying themes of romance, adventure and struggle. Woodcut portrait of Petrarca and Laura, full-page map of the L'Occidente region in southern France, numerous opening historiated intials, floriated initials and chapter head and tail pieces throughout, printed in roman and italics. Later vellum, spine tooled in gilt with brown morocco lettering label, edges speckled blue. Condition: margins shaved close at head, occasional spots and smudges, ink inscription to title (illeg.); vellum stained, corners worn, corners bumped.
