Adolph Robert Shulz (American/Indiana, 1869-1963, active Sarasota, Florida, c. 1934), "Storm Winds, Florida", oil on canvas, signed lower left, artist's handwritten label with title and Eckert Antiques Paintings/Fine Furniture, Westfield, Indiana label en verso, 30 in. x 36 in., in a period giltwood frame. Note: Adolph Shulz is considered the "founding father" of Indiana's Brown County Artist Colony. Originally from Wisconsin, Shulz began sketching at an early age and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students' League in New York. The present lot is a painting from his two years spent in Florida teaching at the Ringling School of Arts in Sarasota. His beautiful landscapes, in which the influence of his teacher, William Merritt Chase, can be seen, include the atmospheric effects of the Impressionist movement, but beautifully combine these with the emotional, romantic themes and modernist colors. This painting in particular depicts this stormy Florida scene in the expressive, Tonalist manner for which Shulz was known.
