William Woodruff Gibbs, 1821-1902, Michigan. Born in New York in 1821, William moved to Kalamzoo, Michigan in 1848. He moved to Armada around 1852 and by 1853 had settled permanently in Romeo, Michigan. According to local tradition his first portraits in Romeo were done in exchange for room and board. By September of 1875, the local Romeo Observer had dubbed Gibbs the "prince of oil painters" in the State. Although his early works were portraits, done from life or copied after photos and engravings, he gradually began to specialize in landscapes. In addition, he was known to have painted animals, still lifes, and historical subjects. Portraits are of Mr. and Mrs. James Starkweather. 23.75" H x 19.75" W. Both are oval paintings and in period gilt frames. Label en verso reads: "James Starkweather. Born in Prestion, Conn. 1802. Scotch and English parentage. Died 1873. He married Roxanne Leslie, born in New York State 1827. She married James Starkweather. She died 1868." Both have craquelure throughout consistent with age..
