Roy Charles Gamble, 1887-1972, Michigan. Known primarily as a portrait painter, Gamble studied under Joseph Gies and John P. Wicker at the Detroit Academy of Fine Arts; in 1909 at the Art Students League in New York under Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase; and in Paris at the Julian Academy under Jean-Paul Laurens. The artist exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1910 and 1911. In 1914, shortly after his return from Europe, he was commissioned by the Detroit Free Press to do a series of six murals about the early history of Detroit. Portrait of Jean Alexander in a pink dress ad white gloves. 32" H x 26" W; signed LR. Written en verso: "Jean Alexander by Roy C. Gamble 10 '60" Small tear to canvas in LL and canvas is wavy.
