six lines of letters and numbers over a two-line verse, stitched lower panel "Eugenia Asia Hogan/Greensboro Academy/June 18(?)", floral and plant motifs, simple wave-like border, silk on linen, 17 x 17-1/2 in., later gilt frame. Extensive fading, several holes in linen ground (largest 1 x 2 in.), linen with browning. Provenance: Private Collection. Recently found documentation suggests that the sampler refers to Greensboro, North Carolina. Eugenia A Hogan married Robert Minnis and moved to Aberdeen, Mississippi by 1860. One of their children (Helen Minnis) moved to Mobile, Alabama and is listed there in the 1900 US Census. The sampler came from a family living in Alabama. The “Greensborough” Female Academy opened after the all male academy located in Greensboro, NC and began operation in 1820. A very similar sampler sewn by the daughter of the Academy’s headmaster is in the collection of Greensboro Historical Museum. Lot accompanied by Census documentation.
