Bonomi (Joseph, 1739-1808) Design of a Mausoleum erected to the Memory of the late Earl of Buckinghamshire at Blickling Hall in Norfolk,
begun in 1794 & finished in 1796. The pyramid is fifty feet square & fifty feet high. The Chapel in the inside is twenty eight feet [diameter] without the recesses & thirty one feet high, pen and watercolour, 470 x 640mm., 18½ x 25¼in., black ruled border, scale at foot, inscribed with above title and signed "Joseph Bonomi, Architect, 76 Great Titchfield Street", short repaired tear at top left corner, verso with the small ink stamp of the RIBA (where the drawing was on deposit) endorsed in pencil "Returned to owner".

***Provenance: By descent from Joseph Bonomi to the present owner. A group of drawings by Bonomi from this collection was sold in these rooms, 1 June 2000, lots 80-87. Plans, sections and elevations of the neoclassical pyramidal mausoleum based on the Roman tomb of Caius Cestius. John Hobart, 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire died in 1793 and Bonomi's design was commissioned by his younger daughter, Lady Suffield, who inherited the Blickling estate. Recesses in the domed interior contain sarcophagi with the remains of the Earl and his two wives. Alternative designs survive at Blickling and in the RIBA Drawings collection. The present drawing is illustrated in Peter Meadows, Joseph Bonomi Architect 1739-1808, An Exhibition of Drawings from Private Collections, London, RIBA, 1988, Fig.24. .
