Campion (George Bryant, 1796-1870) Eupatoria

Sign In to see what this sold for

Campion (George Bryant, 1796-1870) Eupatoria,
from a Sketch by M. B.... R.A., a panoramic view of the assembling allied Turkish, French and British troops at this key point in the Crimean War, watercolour over pencil, heightened with body white, on grey wove paper, 355 x 525mm., signed and inscribed, lower left, framed and glazed.

***The scene mostly likely depicts the landing of troops at Eupatoria (Yevaptoria, Ukraine), in September 1854, when eventually some 35,000 allied troops occupied the strategic coastal city, north of Sevastopol. This caused the Russians some anxiety, leading to their assualt in February 1855, which proved a bitter failure for them. George Campion (1796-1870), although well known for his topographical landscapes and coastal scenes, was also the drawing master at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich from 1841 to 1870, so his works often featured soldiers. .
