CHARLES-GUILLAUME DIEHL ESCRITOIRE, 19TH C., MARQUETRY & ORMOLU, H 58", W 25", D 17":A neoclassical burl wood desk having a rectangular top bordered by a three-quarter gallery above a single beveled glass door opening to a mirrored back and two glass shelves, a hinged writing surface with marquetry inlay (see additional photos) and a single drawer fitted in the frieze, raised on fluted tapering legs with ormolu mounts joined by curved stretchers centered by an ormolu urn with swags; the door's lock plate is stamped "Diehl Paris / 19 R. Michel-le-Comte" (see photo); circa 1870; with key. Charles-Guillaume Diehl, fl. 1855-1880.
Condition reportOverall a lovely piece of antique furniture; its condition is evident in the numerous detail photographs including, but not limited to, small areas of loss to the veneer at the corners of the hinged writing surface when closed, the lower right corner of the cabinet, the lower back corner of the cabinet, the stretchers; lifting to the metal mounts along the legs (three of which are missing), the area surrounding the urn at the stretchers, along the frieze; urn's finial is slightly bent.
