COMMER, George H. California Whaling Scene Manuscript. [N.p.] [N.d., circa 1865]. 8vo (205 x 160 mm). Clearly written in graphite on 19 paper pages, bound with string through two top holes. In cloth traycase, title stamped in gilt. Condition: browning throughout, some wear to binding holes, creases and losses to pages, especially front page. unique remembrance of the California whaling scene, and a charming period vignette. An account of Commer's sailor-friend, who landed a whale in front of a group of "pretty girls" on another boat. "...But the ladies had seen enough of whaling, and it was their unanimous opinion that any further lesson would be superfluous.
