COMMER, George H. California Whaling Scene Manuscript.
[N.p.] [N.d., circa 1865]. 8vo (205 x 160 mm). Clearly written in graphite on 19 paper pages, bound with string through two top holes. In cloth traycase, title stamped in gilt. Condition: browning throughout, some wear to binding holes, creases and losses to pages, especially front page. unique remembrance of the California whaling scene, and a charming period vignette. An account of Commer's sailor-friend, who landed a whale in front of a group of "pretty girls" on another boat. "...But the ladies had seen enough of whaling, and it was their unanimous opinion that any further lesson would be superfluous. They had passed the initiatory ordeal, and would stop right there!"
