"Wash Day Brittany France" is the title written in pencil on the reverse of this piece. Nan Sheets had an interest in painting since childhood. She pursued other occupations before becoming a painter. By 1910, she was a serious about being an artist, but it was during the 1920s that she matured as a fine artist. She spent summers of 1919 to 1923 studying art at the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado Springs, and in 1923 went to Taos, New Mexico with Nellie Knopf and to Gloucester, Massachusetts with Hugh Breckenridge. She also took several trips to Europe, the inspiration of this work. She was director of the WPA for the state of Oklahoma and founded the Oklahoma Art Center. Her works were exhibited in the 1939 World's Fair and some are held by museums in her home state. This measures 13 x 16 inches and is in excellent condition. Signed lower left.
