Antonio López de Santa Anna (1794-1876). Mexican General and statesman. Santa Anna ruled Mexico as either President or dictator for 22 years. When Texas declared independence, Santa Anna personally led the charge against the rogue state, and achieved his greatest fame and notoriety in the battle of the Alamo, where its American defenders were slaughtered. Sam Houston's forces routed Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto two weeks later. 17" x 12 ¼" stock certificate signed, "A.L. de S.ta Anna" with his cipher monogram embossed on orange paper seal. The certificate is a two-year mortgage bond, payable to New York City, stamped on reverse, in purple, June 28, 1866. The document is also signed by trustees: Henry Norton and Virgil Whitcomb and is framed to 33 ½" x 21 ½".
