The Ibis, A Magazine of General Ornithology, The Journal of the British Ornithological Union. The Ibis is among the earliest and longest running journals devoted exclusively to ornithology. It is arguably the most historically important. The format for its content was established in the early issues and most of the nineteenth century articles were devoted to descriptions of newly discovered, exciting and exotic birds. Contributors constitute a roster of the most brilliant and versatile ornithologists of Great Britain and to a considerable extent of the English-writing authorities on bird life in throughout the world. Each issue was illustrated with an average of a dozen hand colored lithographs. The journal also contained maps, many of which are folded which show the locales of ornithological expeditions. The journal was introduced in 1859. This is an excessively rare complete run of the first 109 volumes, supplements and indices from Volume I in 1859 through Volume 109 issued in 1967. Each volume measures 7 ¾" x 9 ¾", contained within the collection are 1,460 undated plates (mostly handcolored ornithological lithographs) by J.G. Keulemans, J. Wolf, J. Jennens, H. Grönvold and others, printed by Hanhart, Mintern Brothers, and others, sequentially numbered by volume. The journals are bound, most with original blind-panelled, red cloth binding. The front cover has a gilt vignette of an ibis through 1927. Subsequent volumes bound in red cloth. The first plate of first volume is detached. Some bindings are rubbed at extremities, spines lightly faded, a few splits at joints and head of spines.
