important George III "Burgoyne" candle vases, gilt brass, each with three arms, central reversible leaf-cast finial, white marble urn and stepped base with gilt brass figure, swag and bands of guilloche decoration, attributed to Matthew Boulton, circa 1771-2, 15 x 12 x 12 in. Some parts loose, marble discolored, several arms bent, one replaced threaded rod and nuts, several nuts missing, wax residue. Provenance: M. Turpin Fine Antiques, London, 1975; The Estate of the Late John Carson, Nassau, Bahamas. Reserve: $20,000 For similar example, see Sotheby's sale L01404, November 30, 2001, lot 26 and Nicholas Goodison, [Ormolu: The work of Matthew Boulton,] Phaidon Press, 1974, illustration 105. Matthew Boulton and his partner founded their metalwork factory near Birmingham in the 1760s. The firm produced silver, Old Sheffield plate and ormolu ornaments and received commissions from George III and Catherine the Great. Candle vases accounted for the majority of the firm's ormolu production.
