elegantly drawn compartment layout with stylized flowers, leaves and flowering shrubs in a rich array of colors on a pale rose ground, main border with interlacing vines, lotus blossoms and palmettes on a blue ground, silk-wrapped selvedge, Safavid period, Isfahan or Khurasan, second half 16th century/first half 17th century, 30 ft. 10 in. x 11 ft. 11 in., fragment 11 ft. 11 in. x 32 in. Pile varies from none to low, patches, rewoven areas, added adhesive, reduced lengthwise (piece present). Provenance: Braganza Palace, Lisbon, Portugal; Collection of Clarence H. Mackay, Harbor Hill, Long Island, New York; French & Company, New York; Deaccessioned by the Tryon Palace Commission; Lot accompanied by copy of receipt from French & Co. dated April 10, 1958. Reserve: $30,000 The compartment layout of the central field of this carpet relates both to Safavid carpets and to Indian carpets of the lattice-floral groups (Walker, 1997, pp. 105-107 ff.). For a Safavid prototype with a compartment design see the Herat carpet (p. 93) which Walker dates 1575-1600. A Safavid fragment with scrolling vines and blossoms is held by the Cincinnati Art Museum (Walker 1997, fig. 20, p.32). Compartment carpets appear in illustrated manuscripts which suggests their use among royalty, often placed under the ruler in a garden setting or pavilion. ** Biography: ** Daniel Walker, [Flowers Underfoot: Indian Carpets of the Mughal Era,] New York 1997: The Metropolitan Museum of Art. ** Daniel Walker, [Pieces of A Puzzle: Classical Persian Carpet Fragments,] (Exhibition Brochure), 2006, The Textile Museum, Washington D.C. ** Thomas J.
