Ottoman style medallion carpet, circular central medallion with interlaced arabesque scrolls on a blue ground in a larger scalloped red-ground medallion with paired wavy forms supporting tulips, carnations and other flowers, corners with quarter repeats of central medallion, the central field with repeating floral clusters with curved serrated leaves on a pale green ground, the main border with interlaced lotus blossoms, palmettes and rosettes, probably Cairo, Egypt, late 16th century/early 17th century, 21 ft. 7 in. x 11 ft. 6 in. Pile varies from none to low, extensive patches and rewoven areas, fading, selvedge worn, fading, portions with fabric backing. Provenance: Mitchell Samuels Collection; French & Company, New York; Deaccessioned by the Tryon Palace Commission. Reserve: $25,000 This rare carpet exhibits the blending of several carpet-weaving traditions at the highest level of court production. The red/green coloration suggests strong influence of Mamluk (Egyptian) weaving. The central medallion format with quarter corner repeats and borders with flower and leaf scrolls are closely related to the court weaving traditions of Safavid, Persia, centered in Isfahan in the 17th century. **Publications: **Arthur Urbane Dilley, [Oriental Rugs and Carpets, J.B.
