panoramic view of busy town and surrounding countryside, signed indistinctly on rock of panel (d) "Jan G…ls"(?), attributed to J. (Jan?) Grauwels, Flemish, active 1798-1815: (a) hay harvesting, 90-1/8 x 48-3/4 in.; (b) town market with vegetable vendor, 89-1/8 x 38-3/8 in.; (c) busy harbor with fountain and elegant people, 89-1/8 x 88 in.; (d) travelers at a tower, 89-1/4 x 42-1/8 in.; (e) church with shepherd and goats, 89-1/2 x 46-3/4 in.; road with distant view of a mill, 89-1/4 x 26 in., oils on canvas, unframed. Restretched on new stretchers, lined with adhesive, retouch mostly in skies and stretcher marks of all panels, other scattered areas, up to 20 percent of panels with repaint, crackle, some cupping, flaking primarily in panels (c) and (d), craquelure, stretcher marks, minor areas of overcleaning. Reserve: $20,000 A similar panel sold at auction in 1936 (see facsimile which accompanies lot).
