Author: Newton, Isaac
Description: [28], 484, [8] pp. [a]4, b-c4, d2, B-3Q4, 3R2 (leaves 2G4 and 3Q2 are cancels). Preface by Roger Cotes. Tribute by Edmund Halley. With an engraved printer's vignette on title by "S.G.", a folding engraved plate of the cometary orbit, and woodcut diagrams throughout. (4to) 9½x7¼, period calf tooled in blind, rebacked and recornered with modern calf, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands, later endpapers. Second Edition.Second edition pf Newton's Principia mathematica, "the greatest work in the history of science" (PMM). Covers Newton's famous three laws of motion as well as his treatises on fluid motion and celestial mechanics under the principle of gravitation. Robert Cotes' preface praises Newton's theory of attraction compared to the Cartesian conception. This is one of approximately 750 copies of the second edition printed by Cornelius Crownfield for the University of Cambridge (see Babson). Babson 12. Old ink notation in Latin on front flyleaf referring to the 1726 third edition; extensive marginal notes in Latin to pp. 482 and 483 (3Q1v & 3Q2r), also to 3R2r & v, and to following flyleaf.

Condition report

Slight crease to title-page; only occasional light foxing within, a few pages with slight marginal worming; near fine, quite fresh and clean.
