With an engraved printer's vignette on title by "S.G.", a folding engraved plate of the cometary orbit, and woodcut diagrams throughout. (4to) 9½x7¼, period calf tooled in blind, rebacked and recornered with modern calf, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands, later endpapers. Second Edition.Second edition pf Newton's Principia mathematica, "the greatest work in the history of science" (PMM). Covers Newton's famous three laws of motion as well as his treatises on fluid motion and celestial mechanics under the principle of gravitation. Robert Cotes' preface praises Newton's theory of attraction compared to the Cartesian conception. This is one of approximately 750 copies of the second edition printed by Cornelius Crownfield for the University of Cambridge (see Babson). Babson 12.
