Mancinelli, Gustavo, "Julia Newberry," O/C, 1877, 4

Half portrait of Julia Newberry framed by a lake shore and wild flowers, daughter of Walter Loomis Newberry, founder of the Newberry Library in Chicago, oil on canvas, by Gustavo Mancinelli (Italian, 1842 - 1906), signed along lower left side "Gustavo Mancinelli Roma 1877." Dimensions: Artwork - 40" high, 30" wide. Frame - 48" high by 37 1/4" wide, 3 3/4" deep. Condition: Good, varnish is uneven, One (1) tear (3/4") at waist of the figure. Background: Walter Loomis Newberry was born in East Windsor, CT in 1804, educated in Clinton, NY, moved to Buffalo, NY with his brother in 1822, then they moved to Detroit, MI and went into the dry goods business with great success. Later he toured the great lakes with General Lewis Cass and William B. Astor and bought lands at various points, including Chicago, where he removed in 1833. Here he continued he continued in dry goods, became involved in banking and the railroad. For Six (6) years was president of the Chicago Historical Society. He died in 1860. Julia was One (1) of Two (2) daughters, neither had children and as stipulated in the father's will, if his wife and daughters did not survive and if there were no children, half of his estate would go to create a library, now the Newberry Library in Chicago. His widow died in 1885 and daughter Mary died in 1874 in southern France and daughter Julia died in 1876 in Rome.
