Herman Jean Joseph Richir (Belgian, 1866-1942) "Still Life with Azaleas, Roses, Cyclamens, Bromeliad and Chinese Porcelain Group on a Draped Table", oil on canvas, signed lower right "Herman Richir", retains Madison Galleries, Atlanta, Georgia, label en verso, 29-1/2" x 39-1/4". Presented in a good carved giltwood and plaster frame in the Regence style. Provenance: Madison Galleries, Atlanta, Georgia, to a private collector, New Orleans, Louisiana. Reference: Benezit. Herman Jean Joseph Richir studied at the art academies in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode and Brussels. In 1887, he made his exhibition debut in Brussels and in 1889 at the Paris Salon. He was a member of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Richir was made Chevalier of the Order of Leopold in 1890 and in 1900 was awarded a Silver Medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle. His exceptional talent attracted a number of important portrait commissions, including Queen Elizabeth, Prince Albert and Cardinal Mercier.
Condition reportIn overall very good, original condition. Light age craquelure scattered throughout. Minor frame abrasion along right edge. Colors are vibrant. Nice, rich impasto to the petals of some flowers. NOTE: Inscribed in pencil on stretcher verso "Les Azalees par Herman Richir" - not included in catalogue description.
