William Aiken Walker (American/South Carolina, 1838-1921; Active New Orleans 1876-1905) "Lively Cabin Scene View of a Family on Wash Day, Moss-Draped Live Oak Beyond", oil on board, signed lower left "W A Walker", 9-1/4" x 12-1/2", frame indistinctly inscribed en verso "Property of Mrs. B. Wilde(r?"). Presented in an early 20th-century molded giltwood frame. To be included in John Fowler's forthcoming catalogue raisonne on William Aiken Walker.
Condition reportBoard verso retains partial label from "Frost & Adams, Boston". Board verso is titled in pencil in flowing script "cabin" and inscribed "9 x 12". In overall very good condition. A few touches of inpainting scattered along tree trunk above cabin's roof, a few tiny horizontal touches to center of cabin's roof. Frame abrasion along edges of board with a thin line of paint loss at extreme upper right corner (approximately 1/8" x 3/4") and a 1/4"-wide flake loss at upper middle edge, both obscured by frame. Scattered dots of light inpainting to address frame abrasion along edges. Fine craquelure overall. Signature good. Colors are pleasingly warm; moss-laden oak tree is quite lovely when viewed in person. The frame exhibits a circular repair at far right middle, visible in catalogue/Web photo. A few minor nicks to corners of frame.
