American Rococo Revival Rosewood Half-Tester Bed, mid-19th century, attributed to the New Orleans warerooms of Prudent Mallard, the tester with arched serpentine front and serpentine sides, the carved crest depicting a floral basket flanked by pierced scroll and foliate carving, the tester supported by cluster-columned headposts with concave panels between the rounded columns, supporting a headboard with a single shaped panel and a similar floral- and urn-carved crest, the generous rails with pierced brackets and applied carving depicting a cabochon, the wrap footboard with fluted vasiform posts with telescoping poles to support a mosquito net, the corners with crisp ribbon and floral carving, flanking an arched face over a shaped panel, the generous interior dimensions will accommodate a large mattress, h. 133-1/4", outside l. 94", w. 75-1/2", inside l. 94", w. 66-3/4". The present bed is related to a similar bed at Lansdowne, Natchez, Mississippi, often regarded as the icon of New Orleans half-tester beds. This example and the Lansdowne bed share a similar tester, headposts and headboard with floral basket crest. The crest carving on the present bed is considerably larger and more fully developed than the Lansdowne bed. This bed also employs a scarcer, sophisticated wrap footboard. The wrap-around footboard reflects the emerging national stylistic trends, yet ingeniously retains the telescoping mosquito netting posts employed on the more traditional footposts.
