478. GEORGE WASHINGTON (1732-1799). Revered first President of the United States under the 1787 Constitution (1789-97); commander in chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Attractive LS as President, 1p, 8"x10", Mount Vernon, Nov 4, 1790. Responding to New Hampshire Senator Paine Wingate, a former member of the Continental Congress, with regard to a government position. In full: "Sir, Previous to the receipt of your letter of the 16th ultimo, with which I was favored two days ago, a gentleman had been appointed to succeed Mr. Gilman as Commissioner of Loans for the State of New Hampshire. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient servant, G: Washington." His large, darkly penned signature immediately presents itself in this visually appealing letter from his beloved estate during his second term as President. Docketed on verso, "From the President of U.S. ans. Feb. 7. 1791." John Taylor Gilman referenced in the letter was a prominent New Hampshire politician and financier. He was elected to the Continental Congress several times and held the office of governor. When he left his position as Commissioner of Loans, Senator Wingate inquired about the resulting vacancy to which the President here replied. Normal mailing folds; minimal border faults archivally repaired; else remarkably clean, Fine condition. Accompanied by 7¾"x9" portrait.
