LINCOLN TENDS TO EXECUTIVE RESPONSIBILITIES AS WAR IS ABOUT TO BEGIN

516. ABRAHAM LINCOLN (1809-1865). Martyred sixteenth President of the United States (1860-65) who led the nation through the Civil War. ALS "A. Lincoln," 1p, 5"x7˝", Washington, DC, Apr 10, 1861. Writing from the "Executive Mansion" to Attorney General Edward Bates just two days before the bombardment of Fort Sumter, the newly-elected President attends to a routine but necessary responsibility. In full: "Hon. John F. Potter, now present, informs me that the entire Wisconsin delegation in Congress, except Senator Howe, have agreed upon John B. D. Coggswell for District Attorney and D. C. Jackson for Marshal in that state. Therefore please send me commissions accordingly..." Darkly penned and signed on lightly lined paper. Docketed on verso. Fine example expertly inlaid to overall 6"x9". Accompanied by vintage engraved quarter-length portrait vignette, 6"x9", mounted within window mat frame. As Lincoln penned this letter, the supplies and ammunition he had ordered to reprovision the besieged Fort Sumter was at sea under Navy escort. Before the convoy arrived however, the Confederates began shelling to induce surrender, thus beginning the American Civil War. A very desirable early Presidential addition to any Presidents or Civil War collection. Est: $18000-25000
